Cattle Work

At The TA Ranch, we have just under 300 head of cattle.

With cattle being such a large portion of our day-to-day life, working with them on horseback is only natural.

From rotating them through the pastures to bringing them into the chutes to be doctored to going out to find strays that hide in the ravines, there are endless reasons as to why we work cattle with our horses.

With that being said, you canā€™t just hop on any horse and go round up the cows, just like the rider, the horse must be trained and fully prepared for anything that can happen when out gathering.

Guests that stay at the ranch for 4-5 days will have the ability to work with cattle on horseback. Each guest must ride for 2 days prior to working cows and must pass a riding test before introduced to the herd. The horse and rider will first receive an introductory course on how to work with cattle and once passed, they will be able to move and work the cows under the supervision of the corral staff.

As guests will see in our Horse Training Demonstrations, preparing our equine partners for this level of work is the most important element.

Terms & Policies

We want to make our cattle working experiences as inclusive as possible for anyone who would like to participate, however, it is much more physically taxing and requires a moderate amount of skill at the baseline level. We have a few requirements for guests who plan to participate in the cattle working experience:

  • Strict weight limit is 230lbs

  • All riders must pass a prior riding skills test to participate

  • Guests must stay for at least 4 nights at the ranch

We want to ensure that every rider and horse are safe and happy, so we must enforce these rules every time.

** We also do not RUN cows. They are used for beef and milk production, so for the safety and wellbeing of our stock, we try to keep our rides and work as slow as possible while maintaining efficiency. **

Cattle Drives are a separate experience that The TA Ranch offers during specific times of the season. For the 2025 season, our two cattle drives are the first week of June and the last week of September. Cattle Drives must be booked separately and are offered at different rates than typical all-inclusive stay rates. Give us a call or an email to book your stay during our cattle drive weeks.

Guests who are booking for our special Cattle Drive Experience are required to abide by the stated terms and policies listed above.
